Lower Gear Oil Replacement
This is another one of the easiest things to accomplish on an outboard motor. Your need about 1 quart of gear Oil. Check your owners manual or talk to a parts guy at a marina to find out the specifications for gear oil you will need. I purchased mine at Wal-Mart they are typically all the same.

Gear Oil Pumps are great for many applications not just Boat Gear Oil Changing.

Prep. Angle your outboard so it is relatively straight up and down to aid in the drainage of the old gear oil.

STEP 1.) Remove the bottom drain plug first. The oil will start to drain. Once you remove the top plug it will really drain. Removing the top one first saves a little bit of a mess. Allow all oil to drain. Depending on size of motor it shouldn't take more then 5-10 minutes if that.

Step 2.) A good gear oil pump will help when adding oil back into the lower unit. Connect the Gear Oil Pump to the lower drain opening. Leave the bolt out of the top drain plug.

Step 3.) Pump the oil into the lower unit until you see it come back out the top drain plug.

Step 4.) Once you have it full replace both top and bottom drain plugs. Replace the top plug while the pump is still connected to help maintain a seal. Once you have the top plug in. remove the pump and immediately replace the bottom plug.

Step 5.) Start your motor and ensure it runs fine after you have replaced all your gear oil.
